Dual display setup for live performance

Hi All,

I am thinking of using Studio Artist in a live performance and starting to test scenarios and configurations. I have a few questions for the experts here, and the first one is, how do you set up for dual display? I thought it would be simple to display the canvas on a separate monitor (which will actually be a projector) with all the tools available on my MacBook's screen, but it doesn't work the way I expected it to.

My Cinema Display screen has a pixel size of 2560 x 1440, however if I load a canvas this size and activate full screen, the image is displayed with scroll bars, because the full screen is not available for the canvas. That's because there is a 21 pixels status bar at the bottom of the screen. Can I get rid of it? Not only does it steal screen space, but it updates as I work to show status information, I don't want that to appear in the show. How do you guys do this?

Thanks in advance! And sorry if this has been discussed before, any link to relevant discussions welcome.

  • Hi Florence, what is the resolution of your projector ?

    WXGA 1280 x 800,

    XGA 1024 x 768,

    WUXGA 1920 x 1200,

    or Full HD 1920 x 1980.

I have different models here and I can test the configuration with an Imac 27

    • or if you don't know this, what model are you using ?

      • Hi Bernard,

        It's an Epson TW3200 I think, and the resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels.
        • Yes it's a full HD one.

So you want to have the canvas on the projector and the tools and the Mac.

I have to go now, but I can make a test tomorrow morning of you want.

But you can also, as Liveart wrote, look at the preferences, monitor and configure the resolution of the projector, that will be recognized by your Mac. Just verify if on Mac you have 2560 x 1440, and on the projector 1920 x 1080, or choose that resolution in the list.

        • and don't activate "video recopy" fonction, because in this case you'll have the same picture on both. You just want an extended screen….

  • Florence: check your SA preferences and make sure that your full screen is set to canvas only, and the background to black. -- Ah wait I see you want to have the tools on a separate screen.  JD2 manages this, maybe he can help.

  • Have you looked in to Syphon? Look at this http://v002.info/plugins/v002-screen-capture/ or this https://andreacremaschi.github.io/Syphon-virtual-screen/ integrated with Quartz Composer (part of the free Mac developers tools) you can do a screen grab and output to another screen (or projector). More info here: http://syphon.v002.info/

Using something like Syphon is great because it will allow you to keep your canvas on your main display screen so that you do not have the awkwardness of painting on a projected image.

    • Thanks. It looks a bit complicated, but I'll have a look.
      • If you want, you can phone me sunday morning (10h00 french time), and we can make the test together if you have the epson with you. Or another day...

If yes, I'll mail you my phone number

        • Thank you Bernard, but right now I'm not worried about the projector, I know how to use it. My problem is setting up the two displays within Studio Artist so that I can have the canvas, and only the canvas, on one screen, and all the tools and menu on the other screen.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
