Generate bezier path question

Busy experimenting with using bezier paths in a PASeq and I'm a bit stumped I've recorded a PASeq with two steps The first is to generate paths from source edges The second is autopaint over those paths. I want the paths and the paint to animate for each frame. Currently when I animate the setup I have, the paths are static; they don't change frame by frame. The only fix I can think of for this is to manually keyframe every frame. I'd like to avoid this. Does anyone have any insight?

  • First a question are you using 3.5 or v4?
    • Oh, thanks! Forgot to mention that. I'm on SA 4 (oh how I enjoy it in the little time I've had to explore)
  • hi Chris,
If I understand what you are asking... you would need to add a new first step to erase the previously recorded paths before generating the new paths:
Path menu / Path Layer Commands / Erase
BTW with you current paseq you may be adding more paths every time you advance to a new frame. You might, in fact, notice more and more paint (paths) being applied as the paseq advances.
BBTW, when I make such a paseq (with a 'path generate' step) I not only add an "erase paths" step as the first step, I add one as the last step too... just to make sure I leave a "clean" canvas, devoid of old paths (for when I finish and move on to another task).

    hope this helps

    • Ah. That would make sense. No matter what I did the paths would remain the same and it was likely because they were the same!

Thanks Liveart and Victor for your response. I'll give this a shot!
  • As the other posts mention, you do need to erase the contents of the bezier path frame before generating new paths unless you want the paths to just accumulate over time. In previous versions of studio artist you needed to add a manual erase step as described here. However, in version 4 there's a new feature you can turn on that will do it automatically for you.

If you have the path : path layer record options : erase before action menu flag turned on, then any operation that could generate paths will erase the bezier path frame before the new ones are added. This new feature is nice for building more concise PASeqs.

    • Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to achieve the same effect, sketch in the outside lines of a video and have it erase, the problem is it sketches every single frame and by the end all the sketches are meshed together into a big blob. I've tried adding an additional delete>bezlayer step but what I want to do is have it sketch the outlines and not get all jumbled together. I've added the above step, erase before action and that doesn't work either. Is there a way to do this with an action step or should I try to add the sketch in every 20 frames or so and mute the keyframe? If I do that though there will be no continuity between the frames. I also tried the path>path layer commands>connect closest but that didn't work either. I've uploaded the video so you can see what I'm talking about...

      • Also trying to figure out how to switch to bezier operation mode:

      • I tried downloading and viewing your attached movie. I can't open it. Not sure why, but you might try making an "archive" file of it (right click and select "Create Archive of...") before attaching it.
        • try this one...

          • that is actually cool as it is.. but I understand it is not the effect that you want. How did you create this effect? step by step ? It should be rather simple to get it to where you want.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
