I have seen this style used in many places. I have to learn how to achieve this style for an important concept for an advertising project. Can anyone tell me how to reproduce such a style in Studio Artist? I would greatly appreciate any help. Under a very tight deadline! Thanks, John

  • The two pieces you are showing as examples are copyright by Charis Tsevis. He is a member here. If you are under a tight deadline for a commercial job, perhaps you could hire him.
    • Thanks Liveart. Unfortunately, because of timing and getting budget approval during our concepting stage this may not be possible. Hire him later, is certainly possible.

I tried to contact Charis by commenting on his page, but have not received a reply yet. Can you message members directly (to their profile emails)?
      • John try: info@tsevis.com

He is based in Greece so depending upon where you are there might be a time differential of which to be aware.
      • You can send email to other forums members. There's a send a message link you can use on any members home page to email them a message.
        • John,
We spoke on the phone a few days ago. You said you would try to "hack" some presets to give me a starting point for creating such a look and post on the forums? Did you find time to do this?

          Thanks,
          John
          • It's on my list of things to do. I'll try to take a look at it today. Some quick thought on how to generate similar effects below. Anyone else feel free to chime in.

Creating a circle brush nib for painting is pretty simple. You just use a path length of 1 and a simple default computational source brush.

Many presets use a paint fill setup fill from set to the paint color, and the fill to set to the canvas with a blend, so that will draw the source nib with solid color in the center and smoothly blending to the canvas at the edges. You want hard edges, so you might want to use the Fill Option set to 'from', which just uses the fill from setting and will give a hard edge to the circle. The reinitialize paint synthesizer macro edit (an edit menu in 3.5, accessed via the paint synth macro edits help viewer link in v4) will give you a hard edged fill from paint preset, so you could just run that and then set the path length in the path shape control panel to 1.

If you setup your paint preset for tiling, then you could run multiple passes with different sized circular brushes to build concentric circles. You could modify the paint coloring in the paint Color Source control panel for the the subsequent passes, using opponent or offset colorings to build the different color concentric circles.

The preset i posted recently or interactively building photo mosaics on variable sized grids shows how to work with the tiling parameters. So you'd use a similar approach but work with variable sized solid color circles instead.

Or as i mentioned before, you could build a movie brush of variably colored concentric circle images and then use the photo mosaic preset i just mentioned with that concentric circle movie brush as opposed to the graffiti movie brush it uses.
          • Here's one simple example of a paint synthesizer preset that generates flat colored circles. By running the preset multiple times you get the multi-colored inner circles.

By varying the max brush size in the bush modulation control panel you can change the sizing and run multiple passes if you want. Hand painting at smaller sizes in specific areas is a good way to build up detail.

You can also adjust the Path Application Spacing if you want to shrink down the tiling spacing. Again, judicious usage of adjusting this parameter while doing some interactive drawing in specific detail areas is how you could artistically fine tune your final image, which i'm not doing here.

This preset could easily be modified so it generated a colored ring with a see through center.

The generation of the coloring variation on subsequent passes is actually pretty interesting and may be somewhat mysterious to beginning users, it's a function of how i'm working with the Dither Fill Option in the Paint Fill Setup control panel.

            • Here's an example of using this kind of preset with several action draw passes to build up a final image.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
