I'm using an image as a source that has a single flower set against a completely back backdrop. Is there some generic setting I can use across multiple presets to have SA paint only where there is color in the image - never painting where there is black?
Thanks for any assistance.

There are a few ways you could program it in the paint synthesizer.
So in Path Start control panel, you could turn on the Lum Range. Then set it with a Lum Min to 1 and a Lum Max of 255. So then it will never start a paint stroke where Lum = 0 (ie black).
...
Another approach would be to use the Inhibitor control in the Path Start control panel. Set it to Not Black Only, and then paths will only start where the canvas is not black.
...
Another approach would be to use selection and masking. So select the black part of the canvas, invert the selection, then turn on the mask and paint or do whatever, and the black part of the canvas will be masked out.
Here's a tip on how to select and mask the canvas.
