question: how to make an xor region fill brush

i'd like to make an anti-aliased region-fill brush that XORs the color (flips from black to white) for each self intersecting region and extends this behavior for separate brush strokes.  i can get either one or the other behavior and never anti-aliasing. the two brushes are attached here:

 xor.zip

my problem is better explained in this screencapture video (watch full-screen HD to see the aliasing problems)

any tips would be appreciated

  • I'll think about it, but i don't think you can totally get where you want to go right now.

If you set the Processing 1 parameter in the Region as Brush Mode control panel to Slight Smooth, you can reduce the aliasing at the edges of the painting for the xor-separate strokes paint preset. You could double it up with the Processing 2 parameter to get more smoothing. It's not perfect, but does reduce the amount of stair-stepping associated with the raster region fill.

The Processing 1 and 3 parameters let you select different processing algorithms that modify the region shape prior to it being rendered as a single paint nib.

We don't currently have an odd-even fill winding option for raster regions, the drawn region will always be generated by a winding fill if you are using region fill as brush with raster paint.

The other paint preset uses vector painting. We don't currently have an xor blit option for vector painting, but maybe we could add it as an additional feature in the future.

    • thanks, i tried the slight smooth before but it's a bit too soft and too slight for my taste. same for the simple antialias option on processing. wish there was a way to control the amount of smoothing and maybe edge sharpness (transfer function?)

i much prefer the "smart blur" ipop. wonder if it would be nice to have something like that available as a region as brush mode processing. i've tried using "smart blur" in dual mode but my problem is that it is cumulative and as i keep laying down strokes the older strokes get "smart blurred" away while the new ones are still edgy. it does not quite work with iterative stroke by stroke animation, which is what i'm trying to do.

      • I'll look into adding smart blur as an option for region fill as brush processing. I agree, it does do a much better job of smoothing arbitrary shapes if configured properly, since it is a spatially adaptive filter that can track edges or the shape of objects.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
