Rotoscoping Questions

I'm looking for detailed tutorials on two subjects.

What I'm trying to do is either auto or manual rotoscope film clips of dancers in front of a green screen. I'd like to then change the backgrounds to another movie, photo or painting.

I know how to do the green screening in Final Cut Pro or Apple Motion, but here's what I need to know about SA:

1. Should I load the footage WITH the greens screen and manually draw over the figures (for manual rotoscoping)? If I do that, would the drawing be on a separate layer than the video so I can then either output the drawing only (with transparent background) and add a new background in another program? Or is there a way to do it all in SA? Can I do this with auto rotoscoping, too?

2. If I want to do create the rotoscoped video in 12 frames per second and the source is 30, is there a way to change that in SA? Or do I have to bring it in already at 12 fps?

Thanks.

  • Hi John,

I'm still having trouble doing a manual rotoscoping. I figured it out a couple of weeks ago (I think), but now I'm trying to do the same thing and it's just not working.

There is a lot of info on AUTO roto, but I can't find much on manual. Is there a detailed tip on this?

    Thanks.

    • Do you want to work with movie layers?

If so, here are a few tips on working with movie layers.

If you want to work with an open movie stream and manually write fames into it, here atip on movie streams.

      • This is what's happening. I loaded a movie into a movie layer. Painted on top of the frame. Hit R. The movie advances to the next frame (I have it set to advance).

But then the first frame painting is gone even though I hit record. This happens on any frame I paint into. Even though I hit R, nothing is there.

        • If you want to file a help request and attach some of your movie layer movie file to it, then tech support can take a look at it and try to duplicate the problem. Or if it works for them, they can tell you that, and try to help you figure out what you aren't doing correctly.

It's hard to comment on this otherwise.

One thing to try would be to use Quicktime Player Pro to make an exported copy of your movie file. Then try working with the copy in movie layers. We depend on Quicktime for the movie editing that takes place in movie layers, and maybe there is something funky about your movie file?

Quicktime PLayer Pro seems to be really good at blessing funky movie files if you open them and then export them from there.

So if that's the problem, then that might fix it.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
