Am I the only one who cannot open any SA3 sessions? I was sort of hoping sessions would be a permanent record, like saving an original Photoshop file with all its layers -- with the added bonus of having the saved history.

Read more…I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding! (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Yes, you are correct, studio artist 4 does not open old studio artist 3 session files. You could manually export the individual layers from studio artist 3 and then import them into studio artist 4 to reconstruct a layer stack.
You should be able to open an old history or paseq file. If it's really old you might have to open it in 3.5 and then export it before opening it in studio artist 4. Studio Artist 4 presets are not backwards compatible with older versions of studio artist, but you can open old 3.5 presets without any problem.
