I am trying to use some presets that I've downloaded from the Share Preset Group. Two questions:
1. Where was the tutorial on where to put the files, and,
2. Once I've downloaded them, is there anyway to know if they are paint presets, pas or whatever? The names don't always give that away.

Thanks.

  • Here are 2 tips on working with presets.

This one describes the arrangement of the Preset folder. So it tells you where to put them, how to build custom categories, collections, etc.

This one tells you how to build custom favorites categories.

    ...

You can always drag and drop a preset file onto the Studio Artist icon in the Dock to open any preset type. The operation popup will tell you what type it just opened. So if you don't know what it is, that's one way to figure it out.

Favorites categories are unique in that any kind of preset file type can be placed in them. So putting downloaded presets in a new favorites category makes them easy to work with, especially if you don't know what type they are.

    • Excellent! Thanks John.

  • We have considered adding some kind of feature that would allow for more automatic import of a downloaded folder of presets into your existing factory preset set.

If you understand your way around a file system and understand the structure of the Preset folder, it's pretty straightforward to do it yourself. But we could probably make it more full proof for people who aren't technically oriented.

Although Neal's point about getting a folder of unknown preset types is a common one i also run into all the time. So an Auto-integration feature for downloaded preset packs could help resolve that issue. Ableton Live has a really nice approach to doing this for sample packs in their audio software i've thought of trying to emulate.

    • That would be a nice feature. I can get around pretty well on my Mac, but I don't always remember the specifics for the software I'm using. So I have to find the instructions again (which I should have bookmarked.)

The 2nd feature is also welcome.

      Thanks, John.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
