working with movie layers

i was working with 2 movie layers, using the first as a drawing aid to draw over and create an animation with the second,..when i flatten the movie how can i make the first layer a solid colour...as a background, i tried changing the default colour of the first, but the the background-original [first layer] movie is still there.
i can do it by changing layer one to an image layer and painting it out ...but there is obviously an easier way that i am missing.

Sounds like the alpha channel for the entire second layer is turned full on. So then none of the first layer would show through when you are in view all display mode.

So you need to set the alpha for the second layer to full off before you start drawing. And make sure the pain synth alpha enable is turned on.
