  • Thanks guys, will experiment and post some pics.

[Aside: John, just emailed you a crash log.]

  • Wow, just wow. The "quickabstracttex" preset is allowing me to do some very very interesting work. Since it doesn't necessarily fill in the entire work, I'm wondering what might be a nice "underpainting" preset do you think to wash an image with, prior to applying "quickabstracttex". Really nice preset.

    • David thanks for letting me know that you are enjoying the preset, I look forward to seeing your results.

quickabstracttex is one of those interesting quirks in SA where the hand-draw and autodraw results are very different and if you have a pen and tablet this one is tilt sensitive so it will be different again handdraw with pen vs mouse draw.

As to what to use underneath... that would be up to you. John's color simplify is a good start, you could use a vectorizer preset, a black or colored canvas, a cartoon preset, pretty much anything.

If you want a "wash" you might try creating a b&w sketch then using the colorize imop. I posted a Paseq that does that some time ago.

    • on another note if all you are using is the autopaint mode, you might try adjusting the path start setting in the editor. The current path start is set to last path end, try some experiments with clumpy random, golden spiral or cat scan map.

    • I use the Color Simpliy ip op a lot for 'underpainting'. Processing the source image. It's not a paint preset, but it does a good job of providing a flat color underpainted surface to apply partial coverage on top of.

  • Some nice ones in there!

It really is great to see and share Presets like this. The different tools and takes on what might be fun or effective really expand my own outlook and experimentation.

    Thanks!

Off of your "charcoalonboard" I found a wonderful start for a paint style I have been hoping to learn from (here)

2472638141?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024I attached the starters here... Hard brush strokes with strong "bristle" delineation - clearly digital - but "organic".

And one silly rose flower maker thing that just had to be shared.

    • Cool paint presets!

I've always been interested in the idea of adding more feature to allow for paint presets that automatically or under interactive user control could generate 'plant-like' or organic natural shapes. Feel free to post any suggestions for feature additions that would make this kind of thing easier to generate.

    • John, thinking  a bit more on the plant structures issue. I believe that this will be easiest when you have added the ability to compile PASeqs thus the ability to use a complied PASeq as a step in a larger 'Meta" sequence. This would allow the sort of recursive iterative processing needed to generate naturalistic structures.

That said generally speaking one would want the ability to adjust a branching algo as follows

      1) as to whether it branched at the end of a trunk or at some other point.

      2) the scaling of each iteration of branching

      3) the rotation/translation (in "3d" space) of start and initial angle of each iteration

      4) the character of the path drawing the line (curved, line etc.) is something SA is well set up to vary perhaps the mods could be sensitive to iterative generation as well.. so for example each generation of branches might be modded to be slightly straighter than the previous (mod simplify straighten lite % control linked to iterative generation).

Having compiled PASeqs which could be recursively looped would make it possible to have "leaf" "branch" and "trunk" structures that grew off each other in a single system.

well just some early morning thoughts.. more later

btw it isn't just plants which follow "branching rules"

I could see adaptations which would be capable of generating fantastical creatures. or at least the body structures with details to be added by the artist.

    • Actually some of the program "fixes" have eliminated a few of my more plant like presets. Attaching a few bits of organic fun.

to make plant like shapes we would need an intelligent branching system.

Craig, thanks for the return post. I do enjoy seeing the mods made to my offerings here.

    • John,

The rose maker was a fluke. I was switching livearts parameters around trying to figure out what was making them work and went to Brush Source/Blob1 and POOF! Big rosettes! Ha HA! They were so fun that I had to share.

The only drawback to them is they require more than a click to get going and are hard to stop before they lose their first petal like shape.

Organic shapes are fascinating. Tessellating and layered...

Some things like this tho revive the one thing I truly appreciate about SA. The instant fun factor. The very first stroke I painted with SA 10(plus) years ago - I had the same experience! What a blast!

What a surprise! Totally NOT the giant machines of Adobe or Corel or the like.

The fact that sometimes I can tame the surprise factor enough to make more than one art piece with the same visual vocabulary has kept me using SA in a professional environment too. Cant be beat!
