Computer Specs for Render Machine

Hello fellow users,

I'm looking at getting a dedicated render machine for Studio Artist on a project I'm working on now.

I was wondering if any of you had any tips on whether its important to focus on getting higher RAM or CPU processing power and/or GPU Memory? A little unsure what Studio Artist needs more of. Bit of a Luddite when it comes to this.

My instinct would be to get more CPU grunt.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

  • To some extent it's a function of what you are trying to do.  Some image processing effects are run in split threads across cpu cores. So for those kinds of effects having additional cores will speed things up.

The paint synthesizer does not split for multi-processing. Individual image operations inside of the paint synth loop might thread, but the paint synthesizer itself does not split.

So for things that don't split, having a fast processor speed is a win. So your instinct of more cpu grunt makes sense.

The 32 bit application is ultimately limited by virtual memory constraints for 32 bit applications. 4GB on mac, less than 2GB on windows. So having a lot of additional memory is not going to do a lot for you. Now if you are running the 64 bit build on mac, then more memory might be useful.

I don't think additional gpu memory would really buy you much of anything.

    • Thanks for your reply.

So a good multicore machine PLUS CPU grunt to cover all bases.
