How do you use Studio Artist?
Way too much of my Studio Artist use is in Xcode building and testing it.

However, I do a lot of work with digital graffitti databases as a source for art mapping photo mosaics. I used to do a ton of work using news imagery as source material for painting and custom treatments with the Texture Synthesizer based on the original custom photoshop plug-in called Wack i wrote in the 90's.

I also like to work with MSG Evolver to explore creating procedural abstract artwork. There's a definite knack to how you work the evolution controls to get good results with directed evolution. Hopefully this can be hidden from naive users in the future. I also think we're starting to cross a really interesting threshold in this area as the number of MSG processors increases and the evolution engine gets more sophisticated and i think this part of Studio Artist has a lot of unexplored potential.

I'm also very interested in simulations of traditional lithography and printmaking techniques. What i've come to realize over time is that a lot of these techniques have a particular visual aesthetic appearance that was actually caused by some technical limitation of the reproduction media the original artists were working in and was caused by what they needed to do to get around that limitation. It's a really good example of taking a weakness of a particular technique and turning it into a strength. And you see this all the time in the various printmaking technologies.

And i also create a lot of cover artwork for audio cds using Studio Artist. Supersizer is definitely a lifesaver for this kind of work so i'm a big user of that particular Studio Artist feature.

Vogue Magazine Stack Filtering Experiment

Someone posted an image online that was an average of all of the Vogue magazine cover images for a year. So it's a simple example of the stack filtering ideas we've been discussing recently. This wasn't done using Studio Artist, but i thought people might find it interesting.…

Visualizing Spatial Frequency

The concept of spatial frequency has come up several times here on the Studio Artist user forum. And i know that many of you have difficulty conceptualizing spatial frequency. So i wanted to post this picture which i think gets across the concept in an easy to visualize way.

The bottom right corner image shows a series of vertical sine waves that increase in spatial frequency. So as you move from left to right in the image you are sweeping… Continue

Hey John,

Thanks so much for this and everything you've done for the SA community. I've been away from SA and the DMN forums for a bit and this is a great reason to meet some new folks and become re-acquainted with others.

Thanks for your time and your talents.

hi John,
i noticed you talking to frank N saying.....
"I tend to focus on coming up with ways to abstract 2D form and watching this makes me think that having some effects that abstract motion itself might be useful for things like dance applications."

I had been thinking how interesting it would be to have "look-ahead/behind" based filters, auto-region selection & vector grabbing. It would be similar to the technique used in video compression - calculating and filtering differences in the pixel state for every frame - and then comparing it to preceding and following frames. I'm sure you can imagine one million ways to have fun with this. Then your modular synth would have an envelope follower/multi-band delay! (or something..)

Are you aware of the Association of Personal Computer User Groups, http://www.apcug.net/ ? You can look up local user groups on that site. They would probably like a demonstration of Studio Artist.

Thanks, John... That's part of the overall plan. My goal is to complete 200 images (I am halfway there now) and then edit them down for a gallery show. And then a book. I may even have enough imagery to complete 300 images with Studio Artist. I have been looking into self publishing using print on demand. The publishers give very little in return. Hopefully after the show and book I will have the courage to learn and create an animated film using SA and the imagery. I have been reading up on the history of Coney Island and it's a great mirror reflecting just how far down our world has sunken creatively and in other ways. I have never been so commited to anything before. Working with SA is such a pleasure and a great source of creative freedom. I keep trying new things and am slowly getting the feel for a small part of the software. Lately using the bezier curves to create masks has been the new toy I have been playing with. At first I hated it compared to illustrator. Now I feel it is more fluid and a fun challenge.

I got a new Mac and have 3.5 on my old Mac. I can't find the number to install 3.5 again. I have a number for 3.0, but lost the upgrade number for 3.5. What should I do?

Hi! My hard drive crashed, but I hesitate putting SA on my new HD because version 3.5 is ppc, not universal binary. Should I wait for version 4.0 and is 4.0 going to be Universal binary? Or is there a patch for 3.5 to make it intelmac friendly? I really want to make the best use out of the intel mac horsepower. Thanks! - Jim C.
