All of the paint animation styles in this are really great.

I'd love to see a more extended piece using an extension of this particular style shown near the end of the video. It's got a really nice hand drawn character to it.

Thanks John.

yup... i should do that.  this particular clip was, like, the 3rd render of a render of a render. i think (I'm away from my home computer).  and (I hate to admit it) for the 1st time ever (and I mean EVer) I used a Final Cut effect for just the bg texture... the grain and the dull vertical stains (the ones that don't move) are a 15% mix of their 'aged paper' thing.  embarasssing... I hate stuff like that. But I was trying to soften and darken the clip a bit (it was too strong between the clips before and after it).  More details to come...

Very well done.  Quite evocative.  How do you minimize flicker using these techniques?

Comment by Victor Ingrassia on July 5, 2012 at 9:32am

Thanks Julian. As far as flicker goes, I typically juggle a mix of using source video that is simple and cleaned up to minimize frame to frame variations in color, brightness and texture, selecting the correct frame rate (lower helps, unless the footage would suffer from that) and selective overdrawing (partial or no erasing of the canvas before painting the next frame.  These are the areas to focus your efforts to minimize flicker.

Julian, this tutorial group post points you at a series of tutorials on building paint animation strategies, including how to minimize perceived flicker in paint animation effects.

I really enjoyed this. Also, you seem to be local to me. I hope to see your work around Oakland. Where do you typically show your work?

It's the rare choreographer that can get everyone to dance to the same music and dance well.  Bravo Victor!
