I realize there are ways in S.A to set up displacements using such things as warp modulations but may I ask what would be the correct way to modulate a source/selection to a b/w tonal height map to control the target selections distortion?
I'm playing with pattern brushes and wish to distort the patterns so it looks like their flowing over an under form.
Many thanks

You might want to post a picture of what you are looking for, because i might be misinterpreting your questions.
Check out the Pantograph Etching PASeq preset category. It discusses how to modulate a black and white grid to build a pantograph effect. You need 2 layers to use these particular presets.
The source image is built as a smooth relief map in layer 1. Layer 1 is then used via Bus1 modulation in the paint synthesizer to modulate the grid scan drawing. So it seems like you could use a similar idea to distort you patterns to they look like they are floating over an under-form.
Thanks John I'll check out those PASeqs.
In the meantime here's a quick illustration to illuminate what I was talking about.
In which the b/w height map effects the pattern distortion.
OK, is this what you are looking for. I used MSG to make a pattern.
I then made a lasso selection, and then feathered it.
I then used the Selection Modulate Translate interactive warp on the pattern canvas.
Mark, this style ?

Thanks Mark, there are other examples.
I only used Image Operation : (based on John's PASeq Block Effect)
First simplify :
Then Displacement :

Many thanks John, yes I'd say that was pretty close. I really like how this effect makes the pattern appear to curl/curve away at the edges but it only appears to do this towards the selection edge One drags towards whilst it pulls away from the others.
What would be perfect was this effect scaled out to all the edges so the pattern appeared to wrap back on itself around at the selection edges as if the form was front facing to view and not offset as in your example.
I'm toying at the moment to see if this kind of effect would be possible using a gradient generator cloner with region fill as brush to draw out a selection ?
Would you want it to be more of a selection modulated scaling warp?
There's a lighting effect going on in your example as well associated with shadowing and highlight in the selected area.
