Art Mapping

What is the equivalent of the 3.5 MSG Evolver Art Map mode in v.4 ? I accidently deleted 3.5 and have no reference point for it in v.4. There doesn't seem to be an Art Map Mode in the MSG evolver in v. 4, unless I am not looking in the right place. Can anyone direct me to where I can review this process, understand the settings and work with it in v.4?

  • The MSG Evolver Art Mapper is not currently in Studio Artist 4. We may port it over to version 4 at some point in the future.

You can actually duplicate a lot of it's functionality using the paint synthesizer and the MSG Brush Load functionality in conjunction with the path start generators that do paint regionization.

Here's a Studio Artist 4 tip that discusses simulating the MSG Evolver Art Mapper in Studio Artist 4 in much more detail.

Any version 3.5 users can get a copy of the latest MSG Evolver build via emailing techsupport AT synthetik DOT com with the request and your serial number. Be aware that MSG Evolver will work with Studio Artist 3.5 MSG presets but will not be able to understand or work with the many new MSG processors available in Studio Artist 4. So you can't drop MSG Evolver in your Studio Artist 4 folder and expect it to work properly with the new extended set of MSG preset there.
    • Please I click on the link but it directed me to the getting started page. Please could you check it for us.

      Thanks

      • If you press additional resources on the getting started tips page, you get access to tags. Clicking the MSG tag will bring up all of the MSG articles there.

  • Thanks for the tip, John. I didn't see it earlier when doing a search in "tips". I will work with that for the moment...perhaps you will reconsider porting it to v. 4.

On another note, is there a chance that "invert canvas texture" could be brought back into the "canvas" menu? It's now an extra step to go to IP:Default:invert after setting the canvas default color to "texture".
    • I had posted a favorites folder before that has presets that implements all of the missing old background popup options. here it is again for anyone who missed it. Just decompress the zip compressed folder after downloading, then drop it in Preset / Favorite.

The ones that are missing in v4 we thought really didn't belong in there conceptually. There's many different ways to build texture or energy maps in v4, so arbitrarily putting one as a canvas erase option seems kind of odd. Same for a simple BW threshold, since there are an infinite variety of BW threshold effects you could build by using different settings in the Threshold Ip Op that probably look better. Providing the old options as favorites presets lets you execute them just as easily as in the past.

As a side note, we will be slightly modifying the v4 default color terminology in the next v4 update. 'Default Color' is kind of confusing since you can use it to set the canvas to the source image or live video captures or other things, so we're moving to 'Erase to' as a simpler labeling that i hope makes more sense to people. We're also making it easier to directly get to the various options from the erase control in the operation toolbar.

      Old 3.5 Background Effects.zip

  • Great to have all the old background effects again...thanks!....and "erase to" makes sense for the v.4 update re default color terminology.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
