Big Sur + SA 5.5

Hi All,

I'm still on Catalina and thinking about upgrading to Big Sur. Any reason not to?

Also, when I logged on here I found out about SA 5.5 and I just bought it. Should I install it right now or upgrade to Big Sur first?

Thanks

Florence

  • Either order for the installs is fine. It's not going to make any difference.

We run Big Sur on M1 ARM macs here, but have been keeping Catalina on the intel macs. And we keep Mojave macs around so that we can actually read old quicktime media files, since Catalina drops support for most of it.

Big Sur is more locked down as an operating system. For example, movie brushes don't work if the movie file is in the Brush folder inside of the Studio Artist folder inside of Applications on Big Sur.  But if you moved the Studio Artist folder anywhere else on your computer, or setup the movie brush preset to reference the brush file being some place else, then it works fine.  Why exactly? You'd have to ask apple why they restrict that.  I certainly can't give you a logical answer.

So i can't really give you a reason why you would want to upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur if you din't need it to run on M1 ARM hardware.

Someone else might have a different perspective.

    • Thanks for your reply. I’m not that keen on upgrading to Big Sur except that I’m assuming that I will have to at some point. In fact it seems that every new version of Mac OS is becoming more closed and restricted. One of these days I may finally have enough and move to Windows.

But OK, maybe I can just stay with Catalina for now...

      • My plan is to stay on Catalina for now.

The rest of my family is on Big Sur on intel. They are more the intended consumer audience for Apple’s closed computing model. Haven’t had a single tech support complaint from them in some time, which is pretty much all I care about!

Interdimensional Coincidence Control

Hi everyone, I am glad the site is still here! Here is a new short video I made. All made in Studio Artist, several separate videos with alpha channels, then combined in layers with the music in Blender. A lot of MSG running through brushes, with several of the brush Path Starts being controlled by the MSG Scan Generator in the Generator part of the Path Start in the Paint Synthesizer. Also some MSG running through a brush, then making a video of that with an alpha channel, then making that a…

Whats going on with this site?

Has anyone else gotten a warning about this site disappearing? An email form just popped up, asking me to contract the owner and leave a message to let them know that they may loose their "network"Did Synthetik forget to pay it's bills, or is something else going on?I think 8 months is more than enough vacation time. Is anyone at Synthetik doing any development work at all?

Having difficulty exporting canvas as image

I'd like to export a canvas as a .tiff/.tif image file to a folder I made on my desktop.I select that from a dropdown menu, I can name the exported file, change the extension, etc, and I press save but nothing happens. It's always worked until now. It seems like a simple task. Any ideas?I'm on Mac OSX 12.6, if that matters, and my system hasn't changed since the last time I was able to export successfully. Thanks
