Content question

I want to create a PASEQ that uses one source and one paint preset  for a few frames then switches to anther source using another preset for a few more more, ideally with no hesitation or pause between. Can;t seem to get this to work in a single PASEQ "row." Also, I thought you could mute a frame in the timeline by pressing the "m" key and clicking but apparently that is not correct.

Could John or someone lay out the steps for these operations?
Thanks miuch.

  • Dennis,

The easiest way to do what you are describing might be through the Gallery Show feature. You would need to put your source images in a folder and name them in a way that represented the sequence you want them to be used. Then create a Favorites folder of the presets that you want to use, again naming them to reflect the sequence. The tricky bit will be the timing. One can set the number of paint strokes that the preset will execute before moving on to the next but that is not quite the same as the number of frames.

since you mentioned frames, it occurs to me that you want the PASeq to be able to roto a movie. If that is the case a different strategy will be needed.

  • If you hold down the m and option keys and click on a keyframe cell, you will record a black mute keyframe.

Option click records a normal keyframe. Option click while holding down the m modifier key record a mute keyframe. Command clicking a recorded keyframe deletes the keyframe. You can't delete the keyframe at frame time 1 (but you can mute it).

  • Keyframing a Source Context action step lets you record different source images and switch between them at the keyframe positions.

Here's a tip on PASeq Contexts.

    • Here is a link to 3 different tips on working with PASeq Contexts. They focus on Content context, which associate an image or movie file with a specific layer. Source Contents work in a similar way, but they associated an image image or movie file with the source area.

You can use Source Contexts to keyframe different source images at different frame times in an animation. Or you could associate different source images with processing in different layers.

    • Thanks John, Will check out the tip What I want to do though is change BOTH the source image and the preset that is in effect at  certain frame: 1 - 50, preset 1, source 1; 51 - 100, preset 2, source 2. When I keyframe at frame 51 after having changed the preset, it does not record the then-current preset. So how might I do this? I've been creating two entirely different videos up to this point and crossfading then in a video editor, but it would be easier if I could just run one big PASEQ that shifted between multiple sources and multiple frames over time. Maybe the mute frame option of the Gallery show is the way to go with this.

      • Seems like you can do what you want?

You can use mute keys to turn individual action steps on and off at different frame times.

And if you want in individual action step to snap to a new set of parameters at frame 50 rather than interpolate, you just put a keyframe at frame 49 with the frame 1 parameter settings, then the new parameter settings at frame 50 keyframe.

Whatever is in the Editor at the time you option click the keyframe is what is recorded.

      • It also sounds like you might record a paseq with ALL the steps you want and use mutes to turn each one on and off based on the source image you want to use.

Below is a text representation of what I'm thinking, where you have 3 source images/movies and 3 paseq's with a 5 frame duration.

        3 source images:

        S1

        S2

        S3

3 paseq's (I used 3 step paseqs instead of the single step preset you mentioned in your post; just use the preset as a 1 step paseq):

        paseqA (steps 2-4)

        paseqB (steps 6-8)

        paseqC (steps 10-12)

        "+": active cell in timeline

        "M": muted cell in timeline

        "S": source context step

The paseq would look like this:

        step01: S1:  + + + + + M M M M M M M M M M

        step02: A1:  + + + + + M M M M M M M M M M

        step03: A2:  + + + + + M M M M M M M M M M

        step04: A3:  + + + + + M M M M M M M M M M

        step05: S2:  M M M M M + + + + + M M M M M

        step06: B1:  M M M M M + + + + + M M M M M

        step07: B2:  M M M M M + + + + + M M M M M

        step08: B3:  M M M M M + + + + + M M M M M

        step09: S3:  M M M M M M M M M + + + + +

        step10: C1:  M M M M M M M M M + + + + +

        step11: C2:  M M M M M M M M M + + + + +

        step12: C3:  M M M M M M M M M + + + + +

My apologies if this looks or is insane.  Somebody let me know if I've gotten it wrong.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
