Output to a new layer

I find layers confusing.

I want to output an operation to a new layer and then use that layer six or so steps later in the procedure. Can I do this?

Can I create layers on the fly? or do they have to be there already?

I don't seem to be able to record layers being created in PASEQs or in histories, is it possible to do it?

Depending on what you mean by "use that layer"  yes. One could either move the layer in the stack or use the current view as new layer command to copy a layer to any where in the stack.

Yes you can add layers on the fly.

To record layers being created it is only necessary to create the layer while record is on. To make sure that a layer is created during playback - make sure that you have layer playback toggled on in the Paseq general settings

  • It's easy to create a new layer. There is a contextural menu to do it if you control click in the draw area, or you can use the Canvas : Layer : New Layer menu command.

PASeq's record  which layer was active when you record an action step. If the Layer Playback control is active for the PASeq, then the layer information recorded in the PASeq will playback when the PASeq plays back. So any additional layers needed to playback will be generated.

There are a lot of operations in Studio Artist that can be done with a single layer that would require multiple layers in other programs. This is due to the built in canvas compositing available throughout the program for every effect. So we actively encourage people to use that feature rather than creating a million layers like some other programs encourage you to do.

Here's an Introduction to Layers tip.

Here's a tip that discusses the Layer Playback option for PASeq.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
