Source Switching

I like to paint using the direct video image as a source for my brush. Usually i just keep painting on canvas movies, changing the source movie, painting more, etc.

Lately my desire has been to be able to use movie layers as source for painting onto the canvas during a Seqkeyframe / PASeq - so that i am constantly switching sources during the painting of each frame. I'm trying to avoid erasing, i want to continually build strokes from the various sources into each frame so that they can be "woven" overlayed, intermingled blended etc.  available to be warped, selected etc faded together per frame.

i was thinking there was a way to route layers as a source in paint fill setup, so that the brush would handle the source selection- but no - that's not the way.
then i thought maybe i could keyframe opening a new source, and have the PASeq do the source switching but that's  not it.

I'm sure i'm overlooking the obvious.
any advice?

  • You used to be able to use source keyframes in the layer timeline in Studio Artist 3.5 to associated different source images with specific layers. The layer timeline is gone in version 4. That old functionality was re-implemented as PASeq contexts. So you can use a PASeq Source context action step to load a specific source image in a PASeq.

It's a little different that before since it doesn't hard associated a source image with a specific layer. PASeq contexts are just action steps in a PASeq script as opposed to being directly associated with specific layers. So when you switch layers the source will not automatically update like it used to. You'd have to run the source context action step.

You can use the recent source menu to quickly load your last 10 source images. So that's an easy way to switch back and forth.
  • thanks! That works really well.
and now - i'm off down the rabbit hole!

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor

Teenage Tongue Cult

Hi, here is the video I made back in 2010 for my song "Teenage Tongue Cult". I finally found my master folder of image sequence files for it on one of my old hard drives, and since the version I had on my Vimeo was of pretty terrible pixelated low quality visually, I re-did it yesterday. It has extensive use of Studio Artist through the whole thing. I made it by first animating the characters and scenes in Flash, against a mostly kind of muddy green background, a color I knew wasn't being used…
