Simple MSG lineScreen Halftoning Presets

Peter from tech support asked me if i had the specific MSG presets used in the Jan 15, 2011 blog post titled Simple MSG LineScreen Halftone Effect. I guess some one asked for them in a tech support request. While i may have them somewhere, it wasn't obvious, so i quickly threw a few together in Studio Artist 4 so that they would be available for anyone interested in what's going on in that particular old daily effects blog post.

They are attached below in a zip compressed folder. You will need to un zip the downloaded folder, then place it in a MSG Collection folder, or in Favorites if you want to access them there.  You can always drag and drop individual presets to the Studio Artist icon as well, or use the iMport menu commands. If you don't understand the Preset folder hierarchy for adding new presets manually, here are 2 tips on that.

Part of the point of those old daily effects blog posts was to encourage people to build the demonstrated effects from scratch using the information in the blog post. When we had to move all of those daily effect blog posts from posterous to archived versions on our synthetik.com blog, some of the associated images we degraded or ended up missing, which seems to be the case with this particular old blog post.

So hopefully these new MSG presets attached below can help anyone interested in this particular MSG based halftoning effect get up and running to play around with with it.

So what do these simple MSG preset do?

Let's take a look below.

LineScreenOnly.msg

Just generates an angular line screen pattern that we will use as a halftone screen in the next preset.

LineScreenColorHalftone.msg

Uses the angular screen above to generate a color halftoning effect.

LineScreenOnly2.msg

Uses 2 different Generator processors and 1 1C Composite processor to generate a dual line screen.

LineScreenColorHalftone2.msg

Uses the dual line screen shown above to generate a color halftoning effect.

LineScreenColorHalftone3.msg

I just edited the angular orientation of the dual linescreen created by the 2 Generator processors, and changed the type of compositing being done by the 1C Composite processor that combines the 2 of them together into a different BS linescreen image. Modifying this preset so it just outputs the BW dual screen is left as an exercise for the reader. You can do it just by turning on and off select processors, look at the presets above to figure that out.

LineScreenColorHalftone3A.msg

The original blog post on this mentions that you can use a ForceColorMap processor to re-colorize the color halftoning effect based on a color palette. So this preset is identical to the one above, except that it includes a ForceColorMap processor at the very end of it's processor chain to force a color palette mapping into the color halftoning effect.

So have fun with these presets. There are endless halftoning effects you can create using MSG, these are very simple ones.

Of course also check out the various LineScreen ip op effects as an alternative approach to building various halftone effects as well.
