  • There was some discussion recently about using movie brushes based on images of ink or paint splatter to build a grungy paint aesthetic. I threw this simple preset together very quickly this afternoon just to try out the idea. The movie brush is just cycling forward for frame indexing, and the brush orientation is modulated by the source orientation. It's a very simple paint synthesizer preset, using 'Paint Color' for Fill From and 'Canvas Image' for Fill To in the Paint Fill Setup control panel. The Max Path Length is 1, so just a single paint nib is applied for each paint stroke.

Another different approach to this kind of thing that is procedural would be to use embedded MSG presets to build splatter in a paint preset. I've posted examples before that use MSG based chaotic attractors to build up very visually complex dynamic brushes. Here's a tip on MSG encapsulation.

  • sort of looses the effect of a splatter when all the strokes pile on top of each other.

Oh, and with the MSG: using non chaotic but self animating MSG presets can also be very effective,
