  • Hi there,

I’m trying to acheive a similar effect to this but with torn magazines. Also similar to Tsevis’ murals (for the olympics). Could you please tell me, what part of this design was done in Studio Artist? Am I right in thinking that the shapes are created first by hand?

Your work is great by the way!

    Many thanks

    Mark

  • See tumblr of tsevis, he says:
"created with custom developed scripts, hacks and techniques in Studio Artist, Adobe Creative Suite and Apple QuickTime Pro"

I think nobody here, Knows about his techniques completely, Even I asked Tsevis himself, but he could not help me, he said you must do practice more there is no magic.

  • I guess practice is the key word here. Every kid wants to be Jimi Hendrix the first time they pick up a guitar! Practice and patience. However, I'm hoping Gad Eko Hendro H can shed some light on his approach and technique.

  • Hi everyone, ...

Mark, thank you for your appreciation.

Honestly what I do is still very simple if compared with what tsevis do. He's the best!

Some of my works I made was inspired by his works. Including such as lately I often see on the tsevis's flicker page.
I also did the same thing as Sam did; ask directly to tsevis.

And when tsevis sees some of my works, he gives a good appreciation as well as suggesting to try to make a different kind of work than what tsevis does. Because as good as anything I make it, people will still remember tsevis, not me.

Tsevis wishes I could do better than him. Not just imitate what he has done.

I told him that what I was making was not meant to imitate his work. But it is a process to find out about the techniques used by tsevis in the work. Occasionally I also discussed it with John about tsevis. And to this day, I have not found the answer.

Finally I created a work similar to Tsevis's work in a way that I know. And with a little magic then be the work of "Messi" :))

To make Messi artwork, I use Smooth Cellular presets, then by enabling Union Skin as a guide, I started to make shapes follow the photos from Messi based on dark and bright areas.
I made it with the mouse (not with the mouse pen), so the shape is a bit messy :))

    Simple is not it?

I'm sure there must be a better way. Even so, I'm happy because I've tried to make my own way

  • Hi Gad Eko Hendro H!

Thanks for your comment. I agree 100%, taking inspiration is fine but not to imitate. Many times I’ve given up on a project because it was becoming too ‘Tsevis’.
The reason I picked out your Messi and Tsveis’ murals was because I’ve been trying to do ‘real’ magazine collages. Actually tearing, cutting and gluing the paper. This was much harder than anticipated and extremely frustrating. I played around on photoshop but then had a look through the SA galleries to see if anyone had come up with a comparable technique. I was then hoping that SA would have one magic button to press and my collage would be complete! wishful thinking. I’ll post my artwork on here when it’s finished. Maybe in time for StudioArtist 15 lol
  • By the way, this is the kind of thing I was thinking of

    Image result for gores collage

  • is that your work ?

  • No, this is by a guy called Derek Gores. His work is incredible. There are actually quite a few artists using a similar style. Check out Patrick Bremer as well.

  • Mark, you should be able to use the paint synthesizer to create all kinds of different photo collage effects like the example you posted above. Use an image folder brush, and work with a folder of movie posters if you want to create something like the Sinatra image. I used Soviet propaganda posters for the collage below.
