I'm also using an image folder background texture for the photo collage part of this. It's the Brush Load source for the main paint preset in this.
You can build photo collage or photo mosaic effects in the paint synthesizer using either image folder source brushes or image folder background textures. They have very distinctive paint synth modulation behavior and associated characteristic visual appearances.
Image source brushes map the brush image to the current size and location of the paint nib. Image background textures stay static sized and tile. You can use the adjustable parameters in the paint synthesizer Background Texture control panel to generate all kinds of different procedural textures derived off of the loaded image(s).
