Face Detection + Granular Source presets

Hi, I have been playing around in Studio Artist 5.5 with the new Face Detection feature in the Paint Synthesizer, it's awesome!

These presets use the "Auto Region Fill As Brush" option in the Pen Mode parameter of the Pen Mode panel.  Then, using the "Face Detect Only " option in the Inhibitor parameter of the Path Start panel in the Paint Synthesizer, while also using various Regionize options in the Regionize parameter of the Path Start panel (such as Adaptive Block Regionize, Watershed Regionize, etc), and then also using the "Path Start Regionize" option of the Path Type parameter in the Path Shape panel of the Paint Synthesizer.

These particular presets are also using the "Granular Source" option in the Source parameter of the Paint Brush Load panel, when using the Imaging Processing option in the Type parameter, also in the Paint Brush Load Panel, and then using "Paint Brush Load" in the Fill From parameter in the Paint Fill Setup panel.

To use these presets, just hit the Action button!

See attached screenshots below to hopefully make more sense of that! Whew!! Haha!!!

It's super cool and I thought yall might enjoy playing with some presets I made, please download the attached zip file of several variations.  Your milage may vary depending on the human face you are using as a source image, and some parameters may need to be adjusted to get the kinds of results I have posted below.

Here are some visual examples of what these presets can do when painting on a human face source image.  You can adjust various settings to get wild effects, of course Studio Artist is almost limitless so feel free to play around and make new presets from these if you like them.

  • Thanks for this. I'm unable to to get face painting (or selection to work). the presets load ok in 5.5.4 but when I press action nothing happens. I'm also not able to make any face selections. is it because I'm on a Mac? because it's 5.5.4 or some permissions issue? I tried a number of different faces with no luck. Any advice would be appreciated

  • All of that stuff runs on the mac.  Facial features are not working on windows right now, but face detection and eye/mouth detection works on widows.

You might be missing the models inside of the appropriate places in your Studio Artist folder.

Are you using the V5.5.4 Studio Artist release folder install for your Studio Artist 5.5 folder?

I was running an experiment the other day with processing video and painting different heads on the moving bodies int he videos. So it definitely works on the mac.

The algorithms are by no means perfect. You get glitches sometimes where some non face part of the image might light up as a face or mouth/eye hit.

If you want to attach a problem face image on your end, i can try it here to verify it works.

  • thanks, here is a quick video of my problem showing the opencv plugins/models that I have

  • Ok, for the face selection you need to press the action button to run it.  It's not interactive, so mousing down in the canvas doesn't do anything.

  • In the video I was using the shortcut Cmd-R. I also tried manually clicking the action button with no effect with different faces.

Piggy Particles

Hi, here is a new video, lots of MSG (background layer) and MSG generation path starts along with Time Particles in the paint synth, the "Piggy" figure I made in ZBrush and then animated in Blender, with embedded alpha channel, then took into Studio Artist and made into several different kinds of Movie Brushes. Several layers composited together in Blender. Music made with Bespoke Synth and my Shenai. If anyone has any questions about how it was done I'd be happy to explain more.…

"To clarify, I did not make this using 3 layers by using the Layers window in Studio Artist, each layer was processed seperately and then put together and exported as a movie in Blender."
