Soon after starting to use SA4 I realised that auto painting was not for me. There are numerous applications on the market that do a very good job at auto painting and are cheaper than SA4. In fact I originally discounted purchasing SA4 because I just thought it was just an 'auto painting by preset' program. I very rarely use the auto paint action.
So, what I have is a few brushes that I have amended the brush source and path lengths parameters and use the stroke angle in the path angle parameter. With a few other amendments, like not using nib masking, gives me a brush set with the loose oil feel I'm looking for that I can reasonably control.
I start painting the same way I would if I was using conventional oil and paints - blocking in with large brushes - medium detail brushes and finally small detail brushes. The foreground effect in the lighthouse image is just the result of using a large brush with the preset parameters ammended as described.
I have only just started playing around with preset parameters so what I have done so far maybe wrong, but it works for me. I have so many question about ammending presets, but I find the user manual is a bit wanting in this area, especially for the non technical - it's a shame that the SA3.5 video tutorials were not available for SA4,
I hope that answer the question and I thank you for your kind remarks.
In SA there is no Right or Wrong.. only works or doesn't work. You have found something that works well for you. Run with it. I do agree that as Good as SA is nothing yet quite matches hand laying in the strokes.
I look forward to seeing more of your work.

really like the foreground work here. Was that hand brushed, or auto?
