KTainer Morning Light

Original image is a screenshot of a 3D rendering I did of a cottage made out of used shipping containers. Drafting was an as-built to look at options for further renovations. Rendering and lighting in Vectorworks, all else in Studio Artist.

  • Great idea to use shipping containers for  housing, Krech. Maybe they could be temporarily used in disaster areas after things like earthquakes or hurricanes--ships could transport them to the area. Make sure to take out a patten on the container idea, I think it's a winner.

I like the idea of using SA along with your renderings--another good idea.

  • whoops.."patent."

  • The idea is not mine, I just drew the as-builts. As for patenting the idea, it is already being done all over the place. http://inhabitat.com/ regularly posts about container projects.

They are dirt cheap building materials since the US has such an extreme trade deficit with China it is cheaper to just fabricate new containers over there and ship cheap plastic goods here than to reuse the containers to go back across the Pacific.

  • Interesting, Lucas. No wonder there are environmental problems today. I didn't know they made them out of plastic, and it's cheaper than reusing steel ones..amazing. Great that the plastic containers are being re-used though.

  • The cheap plastic referred to the things IN the steel containers. ;-)

  • And it's actually cheaper to make new ones for each trip? Even more amazing. I still like your idea to use SA with renderings. I do renderings sometimes and think using SA with the image could give some interesting results. I can't help but to try it, so I did a quick rendering of a model high rise that uses the recycled storage containers...the new Chicago high-rise....made in China.

  • Scott, there are a number of Studio Artist users who are architects who use Studio Artist to generate artistic sketches of their 3D renderings of building designs that are output from CAD programs. 3D renderings often have a cold or artificial feel to them, so having a more organic sketch rendition of the 3D output can be useful for selling clients on a building design.

Here's the white model render straight out of Vectorworks. Shows the detail well but as John said, cold and artificial. I prefer vibrant and artificial. :-)

  • John, as an architect I have used a lot or different architectural software, but I personally don't know any firms or individual architects using SA. However, it does make perfect sense to use SA along with rendering software. I'll mention this in the small architectural community I know.

Lucas, very nice model. I like the SA image that you were able to render also.
