Illustrator shapes

Here I found illustrations for a german artist.

I suppose that he creates them with illustrator and I like his colors.

Is there a way to create automatically this kind of shapes that are regions independent ?

It's such an idea, don't know if it's possible....

  • very nice work; I came across this and would be interested if anyone had an idea of how to do something like this in SA, I suppose using some kind of displacement map perhaps?

    • You can use the selection modulate translate option in interactive warp to do the displacement part of it. Or you could use the Displacement ip op.

So, generate the image that corresponds to the flat regions for the different layers. Run the interactive warp. Then run the cast shadow preset to add the lighting shadows.

    • Thanks, John.

  • My quick proof of concept. Using MSG to generate a grayscale pattern texture that is masked and then random colorized using the source color palette.

I'll try to generate something a little more artistic later. But you get the basic idea.

You could do the whole thing just in MSG. Or you could generate colored patterns rather than grayscale patterns in MSG. And there are lots of different approaches to generating the patterns in MSG. I did a similar image using multiple composited SetToAngularTube processors to generate the patterning texture image.

    • John, i have a problem with this PASeq. I suppose that the "select canvas" doesn't work well, because the generated pattern is full screen, not regionized

    • You are right, if you generate a full screen pattern, then you need to mask it out before getting to the Select-Canvas step in my example PASeq. I incorporated that masking step as a part of my MSG preset.

I used the Threshold processor to threshold the source image green channel to generate a mask. The 1C_Composite process then takes that mask image and the full screen pattern image and composites them so that the full screen pattern is then masked.

In the example above, i selected the white background, inverted that selection, and then used it as a mask when running the Flat Region Colorize ip op (whihc colorized my grayscale pattern regions). That made sense due to the particular way i generated the patterns in the MSG preset action step, which generated output that was essentially already masked as described above. And also because my grayscale patterns were flat colored regions, which is a requirement to effectively use the Flat Region Colorize ip op effects.

You could always use an ip op to generate a mask (like Threshold or Smart Contrast or Rank Edge with black and white threshold output options) if you want to do it as a part of the PASeq. Or you could modify your MSG preset if you are using one to generate the patterning, so that it masks the patterns. Or you could always do it using the selection tools.

    • Here I found one method to fill the letter's with MSG generated shapes.

As you said, there are many ways !

    • Fantastic !

      Thanks

  • I like the style.

I think you could create things like this in Studio Artist using MSG to generate the swirly shapes. And using something like the Threshold ip op to generate a selection mask to mask the MSG colored swirl patterns.

There are probably other approaches you could use as well, that's just one suggestion.

    • The other thing this is pointing out to me is that it would probably be useful to have some kind of comprehensive visual index of MSG processor effects. Then you could look through that for patterns you liked to get ideas on which MSG processor to use when faced with a challenge like this one.
