Paper Quill Art

I was recently exposed to the artwork of an artist named Yulia Brodskaya.

The artist works only with colored paper to make the art. It's based on paper quilling, where strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued onto a backing material.

It would be interesting to try and duplicate this kind of art style digitally in Studio Artist. It's essentially 2D artwork with a raised 3D appearance, so it a suitable candidate. Presets would need to be put together to simulate the colored paper quilling look. You could try to do that in the preset directly, or via a post processing step.

I wanted to post an example of the style here because it's very effective, and i think it could be pulled off in Studio Artist with some work. Or the process of trying to do that would lead to interesting new directions. And i wanted to expose the artist in case people had not seen the work before.

  • it would be a fair bit easier to pull of with b-splines guiding the paper "strokes"

    • Actually, some of the patterns used kind of match up to Region Draw pen mode patterns. Like spirals, or circular patterning.

So i guess one question is if there are other patterns we should add in there (Region Draw pen mode patterns) that would let you do this kind of patterning better in automatic ways?

Region Fill patterns for path start regionization is another thing, for some of the styles i see in that article. The ones that break the source image up into regions, and then fill in all of those regions with various paper quill patterns.

Again, are there other fill patterns we should add to expand those capabilities?

Now the more abstract ones don't really fall into that category.

So yes, for those, it would be nice to specify the higher level ordering of it using bezier paths, and then have some automatic way to get the spiral in from those. So the b-splines would act as guides.

But the ornamentation would be generated automatically.

At least i would find that way easier to work with, than doing all of those spirals by manually drawing a b-spline curve. That would be tedious.
