V5.5 Issues to be Aware Of

We're going to use this thread for keeping track of issues in V5.5 users should be aware of. If you run into something that seems like weird behavior, check here first to see if we have any commentary on it.

If you think you found a bug, we have a tech support ticket system on our main web site at synthetik.com. So you should report it there in a support ticket.

If you do think you have found a bug, see if it is reproducible.  And if it is, then include instructions in your tech support ticket for reproducing the repeatable bug.

The initial release to the non beta testing public will be V5.5.2.

Some quick notes on a few issue we are aware of in V5.5.2 below

///

EXIF support for orientation meta-data when you open a source image that has that meta data in it will not adjust the orientation of the source image until V5.5.3 is released.

///

Any generative paint preference options that automatically build image folder brushes of image folder background textures default to using the 'Brush/MosaicImage Folders' folder as their cache locations for automatically selecting a random image folder to build the new image folder brush or image folder background texture.

You can override this default behavior by using the Action : Gallery Show menus titled 'ReTarget Image Folder Brush Cache...' and 'ReTarget Image Folder Background Texture Folder...' menus.

However, you need to be aware that in V5.5.2 you have to select a folder that contains a set of folders. Not a folder that just contains images. Note the distinction between the 2.

I've become aware that it is very easy to forget about this, and retarget to a single folder that just contains images.  When you do this, you end up in a situation where the background texture starts doing it's job with 'glitch' images' rather than the images you thought you retargeted to.

is this a feature or a bug? It looks cool, but it isn't what you asked for. So we're thinking about adding a glitch efx background texture option maybe as a future thing?

For now, be aware of the distinction, retarget to a folder of folders, not to a single folder.

Also, make sure there aren't any loose images hanging around in your folder of folders, because those will lead to glitch effects as well.

I fixed this whole issue this morning, so in V5.5.3 if you make the mistake of retargeting to a single folder of images, it does what you would expect it to do, just use that single folder.

  • Studio Artist V5.5 on windows is really setup for a Display scaling setup of 100% display scaling.

You can use the Interface Sizing option in the General tab of the main preferences dialog to choose 150% if you are running on a surface with a high res display and you have your windows settings display scaling set to 150% (that is where they typically default to).

If you aren't working on windows with 100% display scaling, some things in the interface are going to seem cramped.

We're more than aware of this issue.

We may or may not be able to improve certain aspects of that in V5.5 point updates.

Ultimately we're looking towards reworking the interface to be fully resolution independent in V6.

    • This is dealt with in V5.5.4.

You should now see a consistent interface display on windows no matter what your Display Scaling is set to.

The program is still not retina display aware, so if you are running your display at 250% display scaling like some people do with 4K displays, the fonts are going to appear not as sharp as you would like.  But everything should be sized correctly in the interface.

The Interface Sizing preferences option i mentioned above is gone now in V5.5.4 on windows since it is no longer needed.

  • A Few V5.5 Getting Started Tips

If you are registering a copy of Studio Artist V5.5, make sure you use the actual V5.5 serial number that was given to you with your order.

Using an older serial number is not going to work.

Also, don't add any extra characters to what you stick in the serial number registration file, or that will mess it up as well. This includes blank spaces at the beginning or end.

Mis-copying the characters, or adding an extra blank space at the beginning, is the most common registration problem.

For old time customers who never upgraded to V5, the myaccounts at synthetik.com are only for V5 and V5.5. customers. So you won't be in that system.  You can still order an upgrade in the online store. It will ask you for your old serial number at some point. So enter it there.

If you don't know it, that's fine, you can skip that entry field, but your order may take up to 24 hours to process because someone in sales will have to manually look you up in our long term customer database.

If you fall in this category, then the first order confirmation email you get from us will not have your V5.5 serial number in it.  After sales manually checks the order to verify you are an actual previous customer, then you will get a second email with your actual serial number for the order.

The Studio Artist V5.5.3 Trail installer on windows does not  add anything to the Start Menu.  There is an icon on your windows desktop you can use to start it after you have completed the installation process in the downloaded windows installer.

You cannot just convert a trial download into a release download after you purchase. You will need to download a full release installer from your myaccount after purchasing the release version.

There are new tutorial videos and feature information about the V5.5.3 release at synthetik.com

We are holding off a little bit on video tutorials for some new things like Gallery Show because the set of new features in Gallery Show is still changing on a daily.  We're also in the process of adding some additional features like Gallery Show specific QuickEdit commands to help beginners get over the hump of using the new Gallery Show features.  That additional new stuff I'm referring to will become available in V5.5.4.  The Gallery Show video tutorials will be made at that point.

There is an overview of all of the Gallery Show features in V5.5.3 here.

Same thing for the new Transition Context features, and the new Style features.  We will cover them in depth  with new video tutorials when V5.5.4 hits the street (short term soon, not long term).

You are of course free to ask questions about any of this stuff in the main form, and we can point you at information, or add more posts to this closed V5.5 tutorial group.

New video tutorials will continue to be made over the next few months.  They take time to make well, so bear with us.  We will eventually cover everything we or others feel is important to cover.
