The block grid was created with a Rank Area Max filter, followed by Flat Region Colorize to reconstitute the original source coloring and Geodesic Warp for the liquid pass.

  • I wanted to use the same face image for this recent series to show off some different approaches to working with grids. Rather than using one of the usual techniques for grid segmenting the image i used a Rank Area max filter to create the blocks. I then ran it through the Flat Region Colorize Ip Op to bring back the original source image coloring into the adaptive blocks generated by the rank max filter. I used a 50% mix with the Geodesic Warp effect on multiple passes to build the melty final effect, which gives a more organic appearance to the original blocky adaptive grid generated by the rank max filter.
