This was generated during a speed evolution session. I was working in the paint synthesizer evolution help page, using the active link commands located there to very quickly evolve random paint presets on the fly while running loop action for the paint synthesizer. This is a really fun way to work, and you can generate interesting abstract imagery or even more representational paint effects really quickly. You just keep very quickly evolving new paint presets until you pull together a canvas image you like. usually it takes less than a minute to make something interesting.

  • Here's a screen snap of the top part of the reworked paint synthesizer evolution help page.

I've been gravitating towards the 'random load all patch memories' and 'load random source image' active links in particular for speed evolution sessions. 'random load all patch memories' randomly chooses 4 factory paint presets and loads them into the 4 paint patch memories. You can do that and then start pressing the 'paint synth mingle 1-2-3-4' active link to start generating random paint presets evolved from the 4 presets in the patch memories.

If i get a combination that works well i just keep mashing the mingle or morph buttons until i build up an interesting image. If it's not working i load a new set of 4 random paint presets into the patch memories and then keep evolving. And the load random source image feature loads a random source image from your current gallery show source image folder. So you can dump in new source images on the fly while you're evolving as the mood suits you.

Studio Artist user Max was the person who really inspired me with the notion of building 1 minute paintings via paint synthesizer preset evolution. It's a really cool way to work. You have to be willing to give up a certain amount of control and just go with the flow. I think the new paint synthesizer evolution features we're adding are great new tools to explore this new way of working.

Some of the active link commands i've been discussing here are in the 4.01 doc folder, so people running the original 4.0 release build won't have access to them yet. We hope to get 4.01 builds out to Studio Artist 4.0 customers fairly soon.
