I made a movie brush by running a dualmode paint preset into an open movie stream. I then used that movie brush as a movie background texture in the paint synthesizer to build the final image.

Could be. I use news photos of celebrities all the time for source images when i'm running tests or trying out new effect ideas. Head shots often work well as source images for effects with a lot of extreme abstraction going on in them.
