More gallery show experimentation. I'm using a different set of abstract MSG presets with the mutate current factory category technique. And a different set of favorites that perform transition washes. By mixing and matching different preset categories you can totally change the look and feel of the resulting gallery show. But at the same time the imagery is always unique, and totally automatic.

  • john is the transition washes (using a folder) a feature that we have in 4.01? if so how does one set it up?
  • Here's a screen shot of the bottom of the 4.01 gallery show preferences dialog. So the Cur Favorites choice for the Start Cycle Option is what i'm using. I made a favorites category that has my transition wash presets in it.

  • are you playing music when you do these?
    if so what?

  • This last set of images are all from automated gallery show runs. So i setup the gallery show process, and then it does everything by itself. If i see something i like i stop the gallery show run and save the canvas. Usually i have to undo a few times to get back to the particular image i liked since by the time i stop it it's moved on to to generating the next cycle in the gallery show.

These were all done using 2 different preset categories. One for the main technique, and the other for the start cycle processing. The main technique is also mutating the presets in it's category. Which presets you choose to include in the 2 categories being used has a huge effect on the final output. So in some sense the artistic control over the process is the decisions you make when you set it up, which source images you are using, and which presets you are using. And of course, knowing when to stop it vs when to let it keep running. Not every image generated in a gallery show cycle is a keeper.

Gallery show preferences can limit the # of paint strokes used in a cycle for paint presets, so that needs to be fine tuned depending on what you are doing. If i'm using dual mode presets for the start cycle part, i usually only use a few paint strokes. For the water wash presets i was using, i set it to 200 strokes.

I'm using the new mutate current factory preset category technique, which makes it way easier to work with 2 preset categories in the way i'm using them. That feature is not in the current release builds, since it was just added to the development code base this weekend. But i am pretty excited about it, it seems to open up a lot of new options for how you can work with gallery show in version 4.
