Photo collage image auto-painted using the paint synthesizer. I'm using a watershed path start generator along with region fill as brush pen mode. I often tag this kind of work as photo mosaic, but photo collage probably makes more sense due to the irregular shaped sub image mappings. The approach is the same whether you want to do tilings or irregular shapes, you just change the specific regionize path start generator you are using.

  • You need to work with movie brushes (or movie background textures).

You start the process by collecting a set of images you want to use as the sub images in a photo mosaic or photo collage process. You put them all in a folder. Then you need to convert the folder of images into a movie file. This is easy to do in Studio Artist, using a PASeq that just erases the canvas to the Source image. You use that PASeq in conjunction with  the Action : Process with a Paint Action Sequence : Image to Movie menu command. Here's a tip on that.

You then can build a paint synthesizer preset that uses your custom movie brush source to create whatever photo mosaic or photo collage effect you are interested in generating. If you already have a paint preset that does this, you can just import your custom movie brush to replace the one used in the original preset.

Here's a tutorial discussion that points to a large number of other online information resources for creating different kinds of photo mosaic and photo collage effects in Studio Artist.
