  • This was done as an experiment in comic book style cartoon making.

    Fairly simple process.

    Open SA.

Make the Canvas 8.5x11 300 dpi

    No source image

Cave man style (the theme of the cartoon) I used a selection to make a frame.

Drew into - at the edges of the frame.

Nearly killed myself trying to figure out how to duplicate the frame... My ignorance with anything other than the Paint Synthesizer tripping me up. I used the Warp dialogue and Selection Modulate Translate (looking for a Move tool)

This slid the image and duplicated it - with a messy little leftover I erased from the final. (suggestions for better means are welcome)

With the frames made - I added a layer and turned the frame layer to Mult1 and dialed the transparency to 10% to use the frames as reference.

    Drew some cartoon roughs freehand:

Made another layer set to Mult1 and "inked" the art.

Made another layer set to Mult1 and colored the art.

Exported images of Current Layer as Photoshop files.

Composited in Photoshop - tho the composite in SA looked fine:

I saved the layers out for potential future editing knowing I would go to Photoshop to drop in the text...

I will drop the two Presets used to ink and color somewhere like the sharing group - tho they are probably already there in one package or another.

  • Painth Synth Presets for the final art are here:

  • Thanks for the thoughts and demonstration on building up comic artwork using Studio Artist. I want to see more people doing it, so i'm trying to push different people in that direction. And get feedback if they run into any problems doing it so we can fix the problems if they do run into them.

    For example:

We added a million ways to do 'LineTo' drawing in V5.

For those of you who would just like to draw a straight line.

  • John,

As you can see - I cannot draw a straight line!

    I look forward to V5!

The process I used - described above - is really the Photoshop way... Which is based really in imitation of pencil, paper and ink and a light board or tracing paper concept. All good ways to get the job done... But still very caveman in a time when we could work with more than "stone knives and bear skins"

The process above works and isnt too hard at this level - I am interested in seeing if there are alternative ways to put things together.

    C-

  • It's funny, because Adobe recently released this magic electronic ruler recently to use with ipads. So that you could draw a straight line. And i looked at it, and thought that's interesting, but couldn't you just use an ordinary ruler on top of the ipad if you just had to have a straight edge with their ipad pen, and a LineTo draw option in the software just to really make sure, and just be done with it.

It would have been way more interesting if the magic ruler had knobs on it you could turn. And in fact someone else sells knobs you can just put on the ipad surface to turn and control things with.

    …..

V4 actually does have a LineTo Path option in Bezier Draw.

So there are some ways to draw straight lines in V4.

I think there's also a magic hot key option as well you can use in the paint synthesizer, which i need to actually look up to point out more specifically. So i guess that's not an ideal solution.

So it's not impossible in V4, but we do listen to people when they point things out, and we made it way easier to do in the next version of Studio Artist.

  • Using an Ipad is like driving a Space Shuttle - with ropes attached to the front wheel to steer.

(I am going to get some milage from that Space Shuttle metaphor.)

    ; )

  • Line to Path makes for straight lines...

Paint Paths with a preset follows with a LOT of options for the look of the line.

Also under Bezier draw/edit etc is an Aladdin's cave of potential!

  • 2472683489?profile=originalI pad with knobs for drawing straight lines

  • Quick, patent it (oh wait….).

You also win a national art prize or some kind of trophy if you really made that drawing shown above using that etch a sketch. Because that's some serious skill with working the knobs.
