One of the funny things that happens to me after working on a painting in SA for awhile is oftentimes I can no longer tell if the piece is good or not. Maybe I see some small pattern in a corner and I like that so much that I no longer see the overall gestalt which may be junk. So it is with this one. Anyway there's something about this that appeals to me.

  • The perception of objectivity phenomena you are describing is pretty common to all artistic pursuits. 

    It's a classic thing you bump into if you do any audio mixing.  It's easy to fall into a rabbit hole where you become more and more convinced that you need to continually modify your mix, usually to the detriment of the song.

    I think the same thing is true for visual art.  That's why we try to push this notion of finishing a piece quickly (without getting too attached), and then moving on to the next one.  Finish a set of multiple images, then curate them on another day, grab your keepers (at least for how you feel at that particular moment), then keep moving on creating new stuff.

    You will get better over time if you practice this kind of thing.
