Interesting Approach to Building Wet Paint Presets

I'm posting a few test presets i was playing around with tonight. These are all built using the Geodesic Source Brush brush type. They are designed to show off some unique wet mixing effects you can generate with this particular brush type. These presets are pretty basic, there's only one brush size, all interactive pen. They were all generated by starting with the reinitialize paint synthesizer macro edit, and then editing that basic paint preset to add a geodesic source brush, and associated settings for wet mixing to take place as the geodesic source brush spreads out from the point of cursor contact. So, variable brush sizes modulated by pen pressure, tilt, etc could be added to make the paint even more responsive. As they are it's kind of a simple study in some of the interesting wet mixing effects you can create with this brush type. I'm posting these so that interested people using Studio Artist 4 can use them as a starting point for build additional wet mixing effects. At some point when i get some more time to devote to this project i'll put together some additional modifications that are more polished for use with a wacom tablet and pen. But i thought these were interesting enough to post them for people who want to try them out or use them as a jumping off point.

  • Here's another folder of some test variations for this approach to building spreading wet paint presets.

  • Here's another interesting wet spreader preset to play with. This again uses the geodesic source brush type. I'm working with the undo fill from option in the paint fill setup control panel, and bringing the color in via the Fill From Mod option i used.

Again, all of these posted paint presets are for studio artist 4 only.

  • John,
    These are interesting.
I am fascinated by digital wet look effects!
I am not sure where to edit these outside of the Paint Synth editor.

Edits in the Paint Synth editor can do interesting things - but a global (B key) change of Brush size totally changes the behavior of the Preset.

Pardon my total ignorance - but what is this:
"starting with the reinitialize paint synthesizer macro edit..."
    ?

    Thanks for the cool Presets.
    • Craig, i was just going to email you to tell you about these since i thought you would be interested in using them as jumping off points for some natural media drawing presets.

The paint synthesizer macro edits are available in studio artist 4 in the integrated help browser. In previous versions of studio artist you could access them as menu commands under edit : paint synthesizer menu. We added a bunch more to studio artist 4.02, so you should have those with the new doc folder we sent with the 4.02 beta.

The reinitialize macro edit command sets the paint synthesizer to a rather boring default parameter set that paints with solid color. So it's a good place to start if you want to build something up from scratch beginning with really basic settings.

The paint synth Editor is where you need to go to do any detailed editing. The macro edit commands are high level edits. So they don't let you get under the hood to do detailed editing, but are useful for people who don't want to get under the hood since they do allow you to modify the behavior of any paint preset in some interesting ways.

I think the geodesic source brush type has a lot of potential for building wet spreading paint effects. There are some tricks to setting up the paint synth parameters that the presets i posted show off. The multi-pen nib modulators work with geodesic source brush types, where the multipen nib modulator is modulated by the spread distance of the geodesic source brush as it spreads out from the contact point. There's also a special geodesic source angle orient option in the paint source offset control panel for use with this brush type.
    • John,
      Awesome.
I have been ignoring the Help Browser... Other than checking that it works when I installed.
Under the hood is no problem... Tho sometimes finding what's doing the BIG magic is hard.
I am interested in how these work.
I will be fiddling with these.
      Again -Many thanks!
    • I added another wet paint macro edit command that auto-configures for this particular approach that uses the geodesic source brush type to create the wet spreading effect. It's too late to drop it into 4.02, but it should make the 4.03 release whenever that happens.
