Mike's Richter tools

Here are all the tools I use to create the Richter style. Richter's process was to continuously layer in color and then scrap/squeegee it off. The tools provided allow one to do something similar. Some are additive some are "squeegees" or in SA terms displacement tools. The folder contains both paint presets and ImOp presets. For those that have difficulty figuring out where to place presets I suggest that you keep the folder intact and place it in the favorites folder inside your presets folder.

As usual if you make any interesting variations of any of the tools please return post them.

cheers

  • this was a great find for me; thanks to all for sharing this! mark

  • I wanted to point out that it's easy to edit Mike's Richter paint presets so that the squeegee tracks the path orientation. As opposed to the way they are now where the direction of the squeegee orientation is fixed.

    ...

Here's an example of what i mean. Note the orientation of the squeegee tracks the path curvature.

To get this kind of behavior, you need to make a few edits in the Brush Modulation control panel. I'm working with the richter1a paint preset. Below shows the changes i made to the Brush Modulation control panel.

Note that i switched the Orient Modulation parameter from None to Path Orient

I then changed the # of Orients parameter from 1 to 30.

I then changed the Orient Variation parameter from 0 to 360 degrees. Note, if you forget this you will spin your wheels wondering why orient modulation doesn't appear to be doing anything.

    • thank you john for pointing this out

  • added one more.  as an additional note all of paint presets can be either hand or auto drawn, but handdraw will get you the control that will best mimic the Richter style. The exceptions are Richter1d and Richter7 which are best left to run on Auto for a while. The tools are native to a 640x480 canvas. You will want to size them accordingly for your preferred canvas size
