"Cubism" effects

Joel asked me how I realized this picture.

The technique is simple. I choose a S.A. vectorized picture. Choose the right picture is very important and sometimes takes more time than to realize it ! Not every picture works well.

So all began with this one.

To realize this Cubisme picture, I also took a vectorized SA picture and affected a Filter forge existing preset. (thanks to ThreeDee Filter Forge user)

The vectorized picture "envelopes" all sides of the cubes. With this FF preset you can control the depth.

For example : depth 50

depth 0:

In this FF preset the cubes are generated by a tile generator.

But if you replace it by a block generator you have this : like the example Joel asked me

Or different scale :

Stone generator :

Perlin Noise generator

Techno

And after all these tests I modified this preset so that the 3D effect works on the SA shapes and

the Portrait 563 was the result !

So my question, John, how can we "envelope" objetcs or shapes with an other picture ?

  • I think this kind of effect would be pretty easy to do in Studio Artist.

For example, you could modify the Shadow Lighting presets posted recently so that rather then using the main canvas image to generate the level masks, you use a second modulation image sitting in another layer for example. Or in the case of those presets you might just route the output of the action step that generates the modulation image directly to the selection buffer.

For example, in your first image posted above, you are using a random grayscale set of squares to modulate the height of the effect.

There's also a way to use a second image to modulate any of the gradient lighting effects in Studio Artist (like MSG processors or gradient lighting ip op. Here's an old photo post of mine that shows this off. So just substitute the random grayscale block image for the paint stroke image in that example to get one version of the effect shown above.

    • Here's a quick example.

I just modified one of the recently posted Stacked Lighting Experiment presets as i described above. I'll post that new preset to that preset sharing group post.

    • Woaw, it takes me more time to create the discussion than you to create the preset !

If you add more depth does the lady "envelope" the squares ?

    • This approach to generate shading is not really going to generate an affine transformation for the lady image segments on vertical block elements.

  • Thanks Bernard.  Really interesting.

Is there a way to get the ThreeDee's FF effect?
