Here are a few PASeq presets i put together while trying to replicate some of Bernard's recent experiments with stacked lighted layers.
Here is one example of using these presets.
The trick to generating layered lighting effects is to build a selection mask based on the upper stack image. Where the areas of the canvas not in the upper stack image are full on (white) selected, and the areas in the upper stack image are full off selected(black). You can then use this selection mask image as the input to an Adaptive Filter ip op effect that is applied to the canvas to generate the lighting shadow for the upper stack image. You mask the adaptive filter output with this selection mask while also using it as the input source for the filter effect.
All of these PASeq presets are using this technique.
Hopefully these examples can get you started working with this technique.
There are probably lot's of other ways to create this particular effect inside of Studio Artist. Please feel free to share your experiments as well.

Here's a modification of one of these presets that generates the lighting levels from a 3rd canvas layer modulation image (as opposed to using the original vectorizer regions as lighting levels). Why you would want to do this is discussed in this forum post.
