Working with Large Images 2 : Stuff about Performance

So, here it goes... again.

I've been working with StudioArtist, once again on huge images due to the nature of what I typically work on. Now, the good side is that StudioArtist seems perfectly ok with these large canvases, the downside always seems to be the performance of it. Basically feels... sluggish or kinda not as responsive as I'd wish for. To be fair, I see that it's a very complex program so I kinda been very patient with it.

Generally I'm dragging along images that are well over 4000px wide often reaching 5k although never beyond that. I've also been working with 4k video which kinda results in me trying to use StudioArtist with these gigantic sized media.

So regardless of technical limitations here are those thoughts

1. Would love to see a performance improvement especially with very large images.

2. Improvements handling gigantic videos.

Thought I'd post this just to hear some voices on the subject.

Thanks!

  • Here's a tech support tip that discusses some things you can do when working with larger canvas sizes, and what is going on if you do run into memory allocation problems, and why that is the case.

Thanks for the feedback, this is an area of the program we also would like to see improved in the future.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you are working with purely vector effects (either vector paint, or the vectorizer), then you could output svg or eps files. These could then be re-rendered in a program like photoshop or illustrator to much larger canvas sizes for printing. So, you can work in a small canvas size in studio artist for speed, output a vector file, then render that vector file as a raster image into a much larger canvas size.

Obviously this is not going to work if you are using raster paint, or things like raster smears in combination with vector paint. but it is an alternative way of working that lets you get much better interactive performance while creating your image, if you can live with the stylistic restrictions of vector only effects.

    • Thanks John,

I do follow some of the outlined things in there. I guess in the end I'll be waiting for whatever version that may help out with my work. 64bit version sounds very awesome and I'll look forward for it.

Once again, thank you very much and please keep me posted about it! :)
