There has been a lot of discussion on the user forum about different approaches to creating paint effects that look like they are painted on textured surfaces (like paper textures or canvas textures). A very similar topic is generating raised or impasto paint effects. In both cases, you are seeing either the simulated painted surface, or the paint strokes themselves, as being 3D reliefs lighted with some kind of directional lighting.

Here's a link to a recent discussion in the preset sharing group on 'Canvas Textures'. There are several different preset folders you can download associated with comment replies in that discussion. including a folder of MSG presets that texturize a painted canvas with paper or canvas style textures. And a folder of paint presets that paint with canvas textured backgrounds.
