Paper Textures In SA

One way of creating "paper" textures in SA is with the MSG processor. I have created a few starter textures. These are set displace your source Image. SO if you want to add texture to the canvas image make sure you either send it to the source (Canvas image to source cmd) before using these presets, OR open the MSG tab and change the MSG source to Current Layer. Ok they are not all "paper" textures but they are "surface" textures that you might find useful. These are MSG presets after unzipping put the folder in your MSG folder. If you have Evolver you can also open them in there an make your own variations. If you do set the MSG source to current layer you can run multiple presets over each other for additional effects. The only drawback is that I made them all displace downward. So, after 3-4 actions you will notice the image shift lower. Have fun!

  • Anxious to try mulitple papers and paper towel. Will try them out today. Thanks for sharing!
  • The approach you took in your MSG programming to create the paper texture effect is really interesting.

Here's a different way to create something like a paper texture using MSG. It uses a lighting gradient based on the texture field.

There's a slight edge artifact at the edge of the canvas with this preset in 3.5 associated with the gradient msg processor. You could use a border paint effect to get rid of it, or crop it out. That problem is not there in v4.

  • Dave Nagel had created a set of studio artist presets at some point that simulated different paper textures. I forget if he used msg or the texture synthesizer to do it. I was looking for it today and can't find it, so if anybody has those laying around perhaps they could post them here, since a lot of the old DMN tutorials and downloads are no longer available on their site.

You could also use the background texture part of the paint synthesizer to simulate paper textures. I'll try to post an example of that later.
  • I've been playing around with some different ways to make paper textures. Here's some more examples. The first is a straight paper simulation, the second one incorporates image features into the texture map for the texture lighting. These were made with PAseq's that use MSG processing for the gradient part. Some info on the PASeq and MSG presets here.

To do a gradient lighting style effects in MSG the gradient and the lighting calculations are split. So you can use the gradient processor and then the lighting processor to do the lighting effect. The FSA gradient is another approach, since it will generate a resolution independent gradient while the straight gradient msg processor is resolution dependent. There are configuration meta edits in MSG Evolver that can automatically add gradient lighting effects to an existing MSG preset. So if you run those and look at the processors that were added that's the best way to figure out how to program it.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…
