  • Neat -
  • OK, I couldn't find what you're talking about. I can find the vectorizer under presets with comic looks, etc, all presets but that isn't it.

I can get out of presets and get to vectorizer but then I have no idea what to do next. Is there a tutorial on this on the disks and what is it called it there is? Flunking the IQ test for today.
  • what is eps?
  • just noticed "in the paint sythesizer" - damn - back to the hunt
  • There's a video tutorial on disk #3 called 'Paint Synthesizer Vector Output' that would be a good place to start. I record a PASeq of the various paint presets, and then run 'Action : Generate EPS File : from Paint Action Sequence' menu to render out the PASeq as an eps file.

The basic idea is that you have the ability to specify in the Vector Output control panel in the paint synthesizer how your raster paint strokes are converted into vector output to create an eps file. Keep in mind that the vectors are not going to recreate the look of a rich organically textured wet paint stroked. You are basically limited to flat color paint strokes. There is one option that vectorizes each paint stroke, so that gives you a little more leeway but it's still basically a flat color look.

An eps file is a file filled with postscript commands (encapsulated postscript file). If you work in Illustrator for example you are editing eps. Apple's Preview application can open an eps file and convert it to pdf (or other formats). You can also open eps in photoshop and render it into a raster canvas.

Some programs that read eps want to see a .eps file extension on the name of the eps file, so i' suggest naming your eps file accordingly.

Version 4 lets you render the paint strokes in the studio artist canvas using anti-aliased vectors, so you can get a better preview of the eps you are creating or just use the effect for smooth anti-aliased paths and shapes within the studio artist raster canvas.
  • There's a very small amount of black outline vectorizer added as one step in the paseq in this image. If you look at the image it would be the places where there appears to be a black ribbon. It has additional paint passes placed on top of it.

There's a Vectorizer tutorial on tutorial disc #1. The Outline Technique in the Vectorizer can be a little tricky to work with in 3.5, we improved it quite a bit in version 4. I used the Sobel Edge outline type.

An alternative approach is to use ip ops to create black and white edge effects and then use the Flat Input main technique in the vectorizer to convert the black and white image into a vector representation.
  • Thanks. Will print this out and go from there. I shall never be bored again!
Will upload what I manage to come with. My background is traditional media and then Painter X, so this a new language entirely.
