Another DualMode Paint preset that uses a SmartBlur DualOp in conjunction with a path start regionization paint effect. There are 2 passes of a darkened edge paint that is driven by bezier paths auto-generated from Edge ip op effects.

  • Very nice, also the Blueman (Sept 20) and Protest(Sept 24) on your daily blog. With the above description I'm not able to do it myself. Can you share some more details on the process to create this?

  • Here's a tip on DualMode Paint.

DualMode lets you combine a normal paint synthesizer effect with an embedded image processing effect. So the image processing (called the Dual Op) happens live while the painting is taking place.

The particular DualOp i'm using is Ip Op (stands for image operation effect). The particular image operation effects is the SmartBlur ip op.

If you try a simple paint preset as a dualmode preset using the SmartBlur ip op, you will see that the SmartBlur dual op acts to smear the previously painted paint strokes over time. You could generate a similar effect by building a PASeq that painted a few paint strokes, and then ran the SmartBlu ip op, and then ran the PASeq as an animation over time. So paint strokes are laid down, then they are smeared, then some more paint strokes are laid down, then the canvas is smeared again, etc. So the overall paint process is a recursive process, involving repeatably laying down paint strokes followed by some smart smearing. So paint stokes laid down early in the process are smeared more than paint strokes laid down late in the process.

DualMode paint provides a way to build an iterative paint strategy in a single dualmode paint preset, as opposed to building a PASeq and then running it for multiple cycles. Here's an older article on iterative paint strategies.

I've tried different Composite options for the SmartBlur dual op. There is a big difference in the appearance and overall feel of the resulting dualmode painted image using Replace vs something like Darken Differential for the dual op Compositing.

In addition to the DualMode paint preset that builds up the mass of paint in this effect, i also used 2 passes of a smaller and darker brush that paints in source edge feature details. I used the Edge ip op to build bezier paths and then painted those in. This tip is primarily about the Sketch ip op effects, but the end of the tip discusses how to generate bezier paths from ip ops that support bezier path generation. Here's another tip that discusses generating bezier paths from images.
