How about an interactive lighting tool. This would be completely in the SA tradition. Essentially - once you enter the tool the program interprets the canvas image as a bump map or depth mask and using the cursor as an implied light source creates a cast shadow/ lit highlights effect that would change in real time as the cursor moved? one could add parameters for light source color and intensity and distance from surface.
