  • Nice work Ian, I have to ask. What type of brushes or method are you using for these

    thanks

    Barry

  • Hi Barry,

I only use one preset for this style.

_Assisted or Auto --> _Render Styles -> Freestyle

But the preparation in Photoshop is fairly complex, and requires lots of layers, pretty dramatic hue/saturation adjustments to the original, and multiple renderings out of Studio Artist at different detail levels.

The darkish border, for instance, is rendered from a black background (and overlaid) while the rest of the image is rendered from a white background.

Explaining it is almost pointless, as it gets so complicated. I also use a Pin Layer in Photoshop to influence the modelling. It's best if you inspect the file itself.

I have posted the final Photoshop file for the Morgan Freeman image, so you can download it if you like to inspect how it is assembled. It is half the size of the image above, which has layers I'm not even sure are necessary... :)

It is a 119MB download though, so be warned...

I hope it helps explain the technique.

    Cheers, Ian

  • Thanks Ian, great explanation. Interesting you do your pre-work in photoshop. I'll download the link and have a look.

Once again thanks for sharing your artistic talent.

  • Hi Barry,

I can't imagine doing my preparation work and post processing work in anything but Photoshop. I've been using it since it was Barneyscan software back in 1988-9. That's absolutely no criticism of Studio Artist; it is a great app in its own right. I'm just a Photoshop junkie, and get things done much quicker using it for pre- and post-processing.

    Cheers, Ian

  • 2472662466?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Same freestyle preset that Ian started with taken in a different direction. One run of the preset in layer one, then various composites, adjustments and overlays all done in SA 9 novel layers, (several "current image as new layer" which are used solely to "lock-in" the changes to that point. total 13 layers).

  • BarneyScan! Wow, that is going back some.

I didn't get started until 3.0. I absolutely remember the first time I used a brush and painted on an image I had just scanned. It was such a huge revelation to me.

  • If I remember the Barneyscan came with two apps, the Barneyscan scanning app and Barneyscan XP, which was the prototype for Photoshop, written by the Knoll brothers. It was barry basic compared to today's app and had no colour separation engine. That all came quite a bit later, after Adobe purchased it... :)

  • Tony, i think i dropped off my old Barnyscan at the Kailua Goodwill a few years ago after getting rid of a ton of old stuff i had laying around. It might still be laying around there waiting to be purchased?

  • The poor old Barneyscan. it went the way of all my old SCSI peripherals. I wonder how many old Syquest and Zip SCSI drives are in landfill now? Millions must have bit the dust...
