  • Splaat!

  • Pretty please... a range of impasto brushes based on this type of dimensioning!!! Not sure how it would work without the posterisation, but it's always good to wish out loud... :)

  • Part of the reason I would like true impasto brushes...

  • how thick do you want the Paint Ian?

    super thick

    somewhat thicker

    impasto

SA has always been able to do sweet thick paint looks.

However, if you want the sensation of pushing thick paint around you might look at z brush or ArtRage which actually treat the paint as a 3d substance. Z-brush uses voxels (they call them Pixols) and AR re-wrote the core engine 2 years ago now to be a true 3d engine so that each stroke is actually differentiated in 3d space from the others.

I mention this because while there are many ways to get a thick paint look in SA I find the best involve "post processing to the paint- either with the Gradient Lighting ImOp or with various edge composites. So it is not the same a pushing thick paint around.

  • Hi liveart. Super thick is good. The Somewhat Thicker link I couldn't get to work. And the Impasto jusr seems lame. Could you do a tutorial on the Super Thick? That would be awesome... :)  Ian

  • Here's an example of a think oil paint generated using the lighting brush load option in the paint synthesizer.

  • Thanks John, that's an interesting approach. I'll try some variations on that, to see what I get. Liveart's Super Thick seems to hold a bit more detail though. Maybe he would be kind enough to explain his approach? A brief explanation would be enough for me... Cheers, Ian

  • Is this thick enough ? :-)

  • Ian here is a link that leads to a post that discusses generating texture in SA.

In shorthand I suggest that you either find the paseq I posted in 2010 called addtexture, or play with the gradient lighting imop. my favorite technique back then was to create the texture (brush strokes) in one layer and use the GL ImOp to transfer this texture to the next layer up.  - In the GL ImOp set the color source to the canvas the IP source to the layer with the texture. try differnet composite modes. Add Scaled, Edge 1 and Replace all give interesting effects. Try also Shadow lighting  and shift lighting to see the difference. Finally one can play with the variation options Directional is good, Orient and Lum are interesting too.

  • Bernard is that FF or SA?
