as some times (read frequently) happens in SA I have forgotten exactly how I got to the image posted as MillsFirstStep. This is the result of trying to recreate the process in a way that might be amenable to a tutorial.I need to clarify/boil it down a bit.. still much too involved for a simple explanation.but if you can get your image to here or to any thing that you are reasonably happy with as an illustration style -- then the grunge bit is easy peasy..

  • The general steps here are cartoon the source. bring in a new layer, convert that to grey scale. brush over the grey scale image with a preset that gives the long hatch marks you see in the background. run an auto hatcher interactively adjust the brush size.. smaller around the facial features. when you are happy with the greyscale as a textural element composite it with cartoon using add scaled. create a new layer. run a vector preset that gets you some nice angles and edges. composite that with the existing image. Take that composite run current view as new layer. do a bw threshold adjustment on the new layer. composite that back w/ layer 3. ( the one from 2 steps back). Adjust the new result with a bias gain. then bring the first layer (the cartooned version) to the top and replace at about 10% just to bring in that light tint you see.

    got that.. good now ignore all of that an show me an easier method  :-)

  • Yeah, I like color too much to stick will mills muted palettes. I also am  too reluctant to mess up her pretty face. leaves the image too clean emotionally... so should probably get past that..
