There are settings in the paint synthesizer that will distort or modify the region shape.
You can always setup the vectorizer so it just does a normal Replace composite into the canvas. Then run the menu command that sets the selection to the canvas. Then run the path start regionize autopaint step that regionizes based on the contents of the canvas. It's an extra step in the PAseq, but you see what the vectorizer generates.
In the next version of Studio Artist you can just use the vectorizer to directly control the paint synthesizer if you want to. So this whole process can just be a single paint preset.

John, is there a way to have a "preview" of the vectorizer effect before paint synth operation ?
